I got that " Service Engine Soon" light yesterday and the car began idling poorly and running rough. I took it to Autozone where they did a free code diagnostic and gave me a printout saying the number 2 cylinder was misfiring. I tried the first suggested repair, new spark plug wires and that fixed it. I'll still take it in to the garage later this week to have them replace all the wires, I just couldn't get at the three in the back.

Ok, I'll clarify, disconnecting the battery will turn off the light, and clear current codes. You are correct in the aspect that there will still be history codes in the system, however, the NC inspection does not interrogate the system to look for history codes, it's only looking for current codes.
And we were discussing NC inspections.
