I am planning to buy a car out of state far away.
What do I need to do to drive it home legally and registered?
What about the insurance?

I do it all the time. I have never had a problem, but please comply with YOUR state's regs.

Get insurance and a transit permit. (states handle them differently, but typically you can get one from your home state and drive it home through various states). I have never had a problem and I have driven them home with their existing plates or ones I brought. (some states require plates be removed at sale, not my state). Some states want you to buy a transit permit to pass through. I have never done that.

I give the VIN to my insurance agent and he handles that end and can get you an affidavit to carry with. (If it is a 'replacement car' (meaning it is not and ADDITIONAL car to your fleet, you can usually have 30 days / dual coverage till you complete the transaction / sale of your previous car). CHECK with your agent to be sure of coverage and proof of such.

money.

I do it frequently also.

Some do get the "intransit permit.
I just tell my insurance agent and keep the paperwork with you regarding the sale and drive it home.

I've never been stooped.
But one time the car broke down and a cop stopped to see what was going on. He asked about the lack of plates.

I told him I just bought it. he said, that's fine, have a good trip home.

Are you buying it new? If you are, the dealer should be able to tell you everything you need to do.

Ok thanks.
Will be buying a used car and it will probably have no plates on.
Also it will not replace a car but added to the smal fleet

That's paid when you transfer the title and register the car in your state.

Old thread, but you will take care of sales tax on a car bought out of state when you register the car in your home state and apply for a new title in your name. I would not pay sales tax to an out of state seller since they are not processing the paperwork for you.
