Hi:

I change my transmission fluid about every 20,000 miles. It is a 92 Buick with the 4 speed transaxle automatic. It has 242,000 original miles on the engine and trans - all trouble free. It's been the best car I have ever owned.

In between trans fluid changes, the color remains a real clean pink with no odor; however, sometimes it foams a little (not much) and lately I see it is down a little bit, but I don't see any leaks.

Any thoughts on the periodic bubbles and the mysterious disappearance? Also, if I keep up this maintenance, how long have you seen these transmissions last?

Thank you.

Biggest killer of an auto trans is heat.

Pink fluid has me wondering if it has water mixed in with it.....?

Where are you checking for leaks? There's more than just the area around the trans pan.

Perhaps it's possible the trans cooler is allowing coolant to mix in with it? Does the coolant have any oil bubbles floating in it?

Anyone else care to take a stab at it?

I had a 94 Cutlass Supreme that was losing fluid, and I never did figure out where it was going. I even put cardboard under the car to check for drips, and nothing. The transmission ended up failing at 110k miles. I had it rebuilt and it failed again 25k miles later. If you have 242k on a 92 overdrive, then you are doing very good IMO! I have no idea about the foaming, sorry.

Just to clarify Deez Nuttz.Milky pink ATF has water mixed into it.Newspaper helps in telling what type of fluild is dripping under a car.Rather than brown cardboard.

One possibility is that you can get air bubbles in your trans fluid if it is overfilled. Make sure you are checking it per manufacturers specs. and on level ground. Good luck to you.

Sounds like the Bubbles could be from a lack of fluid. If you say it seemed a bit low that could very easily be the problem. Be sure to use a good transition fluid, a good brand name.
