I am trying to help out a family member who has a 2006 Ford Fusion that has started making a whining noise most of the time when she turns the steering wheel or applies the brakes. She had all new brakes put on a few months ago and just replace the struts in the front only shortly after that. Rack and pinion was also replaced.

I apologize that this isn't much to go on, but I know very little about car repairs and I don't know any honest mechanics personally that I could ask and trust not to inflate the problem and cost. She has already taken the car back to where she had the brakes replaced and they found everything to be ok.

Any advice is welcome.

Is the power steering fluid reservoir full. And was the steering rack bled and filled to correct level. Any leaks?

Previous post def. Check power steering pump, also check the serpentine belt. If it's worn, or dragging on the idler arm pulley, it could cause that noise.
Ford, has notoriously had problems with power steering pumps leaking.

extra stress put on it, if it is weak, or glazed doesn't always happen at low rpm's. Sometimes a belt doesn't squeal or drag until it has a load put on it.
Plus, it was something to check out. Not, a mechanical diagnosis. Person can't give a lot of info, there are lots of possibilities. Since you have made that diagnosis, then, the Serpentine belt is fine. Nothing to even consider.

This must be different sounds correct? 1 sound with the steering and a totally different sound with the braking. Because these systems are totally independent of each other.


There is a good chance the steering system needs new fluid, very easy to do by yourself. Try this if the fluid has never been changed or hasn't been changed in a few years.


The braking, we are going to need more description. What does the sound sound like? Where is it coming from exactly? The wheel area? One side, or both sides? front or back? etc

Yep because the Serpentine just turns the pulleys it’s either the power steering pump or leaks in the stearing rack or the rack it’s self. The Serpentine is a fixed belt they are not like the old fan belts that use to stretch the Serpentine belt has a belt tensioner always putting tension on it. The old belts like the fan and ac and power steering belt were separate belts with no tensioner on them. And if it was the tensioner pulley it would squeel all the time at idle.

Still would not squeal if powers steering fluid was dirty. And brake noise has nothing to do with steering.

Squealing sound: Belt slipping
Chirping sound: Misalignment of an accessory drive pulley
Frayed belt edge: Misalignment of an accessory drive pulley
Polished belt edges: Belt slipping
Glazed belt grooves: Belt slipping
Fluid contamination: Oil, power steering, or coolant leak
Excessive cracking: Other than severe old age, defective tensioner
Whirring sound: defective bearing in tensioner pulley or idler pulley
Rhythmic noises occurring at engine speed: Delaminating belt backing, chunking of belt ridges, or foreign object embedded in belt groove
Grinding sound: damaged bearings in driven accessory
Belt coming off: Pulley misalignment, belt misalignment on pulley, defective tensioner, or bearing wear in tensioner, idler or driven accessories

Belt noise can be hard to isolate, as the sound may seem to be coming from an accessory drive, such as the alternator or air conditioning compressor. A noise that occurs only when the vehicle accelerates is likely to be a slipping belt, as is a noise that occurs only when the car is started cold. Chirping is caused when a pulley is misaligned, so that the belt ridges initially contact the sides of the sides of the grooves and then slide downward along the groove’s sides as they seat in the pulley.
