My first car (1987 Olds Cutlass supreme) had no airbags..and even my current daily driver (lifted 91 F250 4x4) also has no air bags and only rear anti-lock brakes....
Why would the OP assume that everyone's first car had any airbags at all?
My first car had...none, my second car had...none, and the same could be said for my third and fourth cars as well.
Yes, I survived the absence of airbags, but--of course--driving for 41 years with no accidents of any kind does help to keep you and your passengers very safe.
My first car to have airbags was an '86 Taurus, and it had two airbags.
My current car has six.
I think that the record-holder is the new-to-the-US Scion IQ, which has 10 airbags.
None. It also didn't have disc brakes. Actually, out of the six cars I've owned, only one has had airbags, and the two most recent ones had none.
