It was designed to run at that rpm and higher, all day long on the highway. You will not hurt a single thing to drive it at 3,000 rpm's! You would actually do it more harm by short-shifting it and lugging the engine at low rpm's.
^^^This information is correct. Nothing to worry about. You're probably getting maximum performance there.
BTW Ford Fieta, is that what they call a cheesy Ford...
Thank you...just bought this car and called the dealer I bought it from and he started talking about the govenor and that I was probably close to the highest speed it would go...and did I in fact have it in the highest gear at the time...yes I did...his response scared me...he said I probably should not drive it that fast. I bought this car for the good fuel economy and to be able to driv eit on long trips...on highways where the speed is 70-75. so I am good...l.thank you...thought I had made a poor choice. appreciate your time.

Thank you....and I hope you are not saying it is a "cheap" car...just a joke on the "cheesy" right?
Depends on the car, depends on the gear and the power band, go get your car dyno'd so you know the power ratios. Generally, I would say 5k and below is good before you need to shift.
I have just purchased a 2012 Ford Fieta 5-speed manual...at 70MPH it was 3000 RPM's concerned this is a problem. Has right at 12K miles on it. Please answer ASAP.
3K rpm @ 70mph is common for 4-cylinders; even V6's tend to run near that range. No worries.

Not for mine. My Sonata (2.4 4cyl) only runs at 2k rpm @ 70mph. 3k would be seriously annoying. I could understand it if this were the old days with 3 speeds.

I'm not sure this makes any sense. The RPM will be linked to the gear you are in, you can drive at 70mph at more than just one gear, 3rd - 6th (depends on tranny). I can run quiet at 70mph in 5th gear (around 1.3k) or loud in 3rd gear (around 5.5k).
I assume you have an automatic? Automatics will shift for you, but they aren't as efficient because they do not take advantage of RPMs, not unless you have some synchro technology that matches your revolutions, it's one reason manuals get slightly better gas mileage compared to an automatic. CVTs try to account for this as well.

I said it was common; I didn't say every 4-cylinder runs at that range.
Is it harder on your engine when going up hill to wind it out or to lug it out?
Lugging an engine is always bad, doesn't matter what the circumstance is.
Winding it out at high-rpm is not as bad and actually has certain benefits.
