1993 Ford F150 5 speed (6 cylinder)

Can't change gears unless engine is turned off.
i suspect the clutch has given out.

Got a quote over the phone for ~$900. Does that sound like a fair price for a clutch replacement or should I keep looking?
thanks!

That sounds about par for the materials and shop time required.
You can probably still find (a good shop) for something less... but it won't be a LOT less.
Turnover time comes into play too: "pick it up after work today..." counts for something.

You need to take the truck to a shop. No mechanic, either over the phone or on the internet can diagnose your problem.
Your problem could be as simple as a defective hydraulic slave cylinder or master cylinder.

not with my luck!
I was trying to get a worse case scenario so that I would have enough money on hand to pay for the repairs. but then again, with my luck, worse case would be more than a simply clutch replacement..

^This. Or even just 20 year old watery fluid.

I assumed the diagnosis was solid.
If it isn't... then the first job is finding a mechanic you trust to go over the old truck.

well, other than me thinking out loud.. (clutch).. there has been no solid diagnosis. I simply picked up the phone and asked about the cost of a replacement clutch... I didn't ask for them to diagnose the symptoms... but was just getting a worse case dollar figure.

Fingers crossed it might be something other than a clutch replacement.. but not holding my breath.

meh. Let him be Dad for as long as he can.
Afterwards you can take him out for dinner or to a ball game.

He already mentioned swapping trucks with me a few months back. He has a much newer F150...

can't do that.

If I told him that clutch might need replacing, he would come down, get it fixed and demand we trad trucks..

So? Let him. Thank him sincerely and then take him out to dinner.

Smile... and say "no thanks, Dad the repair was more than enough".

btw... I really don't get why this is an issue.
Invite him down and get the diagnosis done. Go from there.
