A friend of mine asked me to replace the brake lights on her car (08 Hyundai Tiburon). Said that a motorist alerted her that her brake lights weren't working.

I replaced the bulbs but when I had her step on the brakes they still didn't come on. Had her turn on the headlights and the bulbs lit up, but when she stepped on the brakes still didn't get brighter.

The weird thing was that after stepping on the brakes again they did come on once but not again. So I know it's not the bulbs, but I'm wondering if there is anything else I can take a look at before she brings it to a shop.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

The bulb plug could be corroded/defective/partially broken.

What happened to the 10 year 100,000 mile warranty?

That's for the drivetrain. But not even the basic warranty covers expendable items like bulbs and wiper blades.

Possibly a bad switch at the pedal.

What happened to the "bumper to bumper" warranty?

I'm gonna assume that some of those that tout 10 year 100,000 warranty assume much more is covered.

Exactly what is NOT a wear item on any vehicle?

If it's both lights then I also vote for the pedal switch. I had a similar problem in a 2011 Mercedes but only on one side- it was a corroded contact that was solved via soldering a bypass wire over the bad spot (it was on the board that all the bulbs in the tail light connected to, not where the bulb itself made contact). Apparently a common problem in that car.

Check and see if the rear turn signals work. If so, more than likely the brake light switch is bad.

Its most likely the brake light switch under the brake pedal not that expensive to fix.

Awesome, thanks so much for the information. When I was looking up the switch online, I stumbled across a Hyundai recall for this exact issue.

Thanks again!
