4 months ago our 2006 Toyota Innova stopped in the middle of the road one day. Tried to restart it half a dozen times, no go. 3 hrs later waiting for a tow truck, I decided to start it again and it started, but it took awhile before it started up. Ever since then, it hasn't yet happened again. My mechanic even hooked up an engine anylzer under the dashboard, but nothing showed up unusual. Beats the heck out of me!
I was in popeyes line an all of a sudden it cut off. I wouldnt start back up. All the lights an radio still works. Tried to start it a few times and it just whinned. Now it just clinks 2004 saturn ion
Looking at what they have done to my phone so they can claim and advertise longer battery life, it woudl not surprise me that they did it with cars. "Look our car gets amazing MPG (when it is not running).
I had the same happening on highway with a Pontiac Bonneville (rental) many years ago.
Very scary...engine turn off by itself while I was driving at around 60 MPH.
Luckily was not a lot of traffic and nobody behind me.
Restarted with no problem and worked well for rest of the day before I returned it.

There is no reason for a car turning off to get you killed. Just put it in neutral (or depress the clutch pedal) and coast to a stop. If possible pull to the shoulder and re-start the car. Streeing and braking will still work, you just have to push harder because you lose the power assist. DO NOT turn the key to the off position when you are still moving. This will lock the steering wheel.
My guess is that you have a problem with the computer module that controls the ignition, but it could be lots of different things. Search online. If there are a lot of people with a simlar problem, there will be some who found to solution and posted it.
You have a bad ignition switch. My Cavalier had the same problem.
Almost always a crank sensor if the car just dies, but you are able to restart, if you put in neutral. . Common on some early 2000 GM vehicles
