There are some great BMW and Volvo offerings you should consider (for client / driving experience)

My son has a s40 with 6 spd and AWD, WoW it is pretty, nice for passengers, and stable too. He is moving to NZ this fall and selling it, and is having a tough time 'parting-company'. He got it quite reasonably and should come out ahead on the sale.

LOW MILEAGE, NON-RUST, desireable car. I told him to advertise in NE USA and Canada, I will be HAPPY to deliver it Sept to Oct!

I was IMPRESSED... (Tough for a VW Diesel 50 mpg driver)

The Escape will be cheaper in the next few months since the new one hit the streets (new body style) but I think the old one looks way better. Jetta's are ideal if TDI (and they will hold their value too).

Surprisingly the escapes seen online look really beat up, located at a very bad dealership for reviews, or don't even 3,wheel drive.
Stealth, I cant drive manual transmission and i want something a little sooner than that but thanks.

Since you like the Impala, what about a Buick? There are a couple of LaCrosse for sale at the local Buick dealer in Danbury, one with 38k miles and one with 70k miles, around $9-10k. It's a softer car, compared to the Volvos and VWs, but is similar to the Impala. The only issue with the one with 38k miles is a cloth interior, not sure if you needed leather or not.

I searched on the NY side of the border, using Northern Westchester as a baseline, and it's difficult to find lower mileage Volvos. However, there was one at Mercedes of Fairfield for an S60 around 70k miles for a 2006 2.5T AWD, under $10k asking. There's also a one-owner 2006 S60 2.5T that was advertised at Hassel Volvo, if you do not mind a trip to Long Island, asking just under $11k with mileage around 65k.

Since you liked the Impala, I would get one of those. They are reasonably priced. I bet you can even get an LTZ in your price range. Try looking for 2006-2008. For a 2008 you may have to raise your budget a bit. Remember prices online are just asking prices.

Yes, indeed, the Buick does tend to have an older demographic that favors it. You can search for GM certified Impalas at gmcertified.com, as well.

I like my Altima (07-12). I also test drove the first gen AWD g35. It was just OK and I couldn't justify the price. I also test drove an E46 3 series which I liked, but I didn't want to upgrade at the time. Maintenance may be a bit of an issue on those though. I never drove one because it was an afterthought, but I think the first get S60 is worth looking into.

I only had an Impala for 1.5 day rental on a 6 day trip. Had to take it back since the low tire pressure gauge came on and I didn't want to mess with it. I'm sure it was an LTZ, since it had the leather seats & XM radio. Then they gave me a Altima.
Both just seemed great especially coming from a 12 year old SUV.
To check back on track here, I keep changing my mind. Might even pass on the Volvos because I don't like the stereo setup with the numbers going down the center 2 at a time. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I can be very fussy and particular. Most of the altima's i've seen in my price range are either an 2005/2006. I can't make my mind up

An 07 or 08 Altima with a 2.5 isn't too hard to find at your price, but it's going to have around 80k miles of more. I personally don't think that is a big deal for almost any car built in the last 15 years of so. I like the fact that it has a timing chain so that's one less maintenance issue to worry about and you can swap the stereo out if you want. MPG is good and I personally thing it's fairly good on power too.
