So i'm thinking of buying this car near waterbury. It's listed as around $9000, but I asked the dealer over the phone what the 'out the door' price was.
He said additional fees include:
$598 Conveyance Fee
$198 Vintage Fee (WTF is this??? I think he mentioned something about the VIN number when i asked him about it)
$140 Registration
Sales tax (i'm guessing around $540 at 6 percent?)
Questions i have:
1) Should the 'conveyance fee' be that high? Isn't that basically just the paperwork they have to do?
2) WTF is a vintage fee?
3) The registration fee - does that include transferring title to the car to me and giving me plates?
So what do you guys think about the fees in general? Thanks guys!
All you should have to pay is registration fees and taxes.
Those other fees are BS, and frankly, way too high. A lot of dealers will charge you a processing fee, which covers labor on paperwork, but it's usually no more than ~$300.

LOL Pay $140 and that's it. Tell them the rest is bullsh*t and if they say "it's state mandated" ask for the statute because it doesn't exist. Then tell them you would like to call the DMV dealer and repairers division for clarification. The rest of the BS will disappear quickly.
If they priced the car hoping to make it up on the paperwork end, that's their screw up.
I have seen these type of fees on new cars but not used. I would not pay them. Negoiate the final price including everything but sales tax which is standard. Every time he gives you a new quote, repeat asking him if this includes ALL fees. I am sorry but I NEVER trust a car salesman so get it in writing. Also remember that this is your money and they want to get it and as much of it as possible. Do not try to be nice. This is business and they are not your friend. You need to be firm. Sorry if I sound mean but I have been through this enough to know that if there is a way to take advantage of you, a car dealer will.
You can check online what people are paying for the car you choose. Edmunds is a good resource. Also read the information on the carbuyingtips.com link below for information on how to buy a car. It is a great resouce.

Thanks for your help!
The conveyance fee is what's called a doc fee in most places. It's basically the dealers fee for processing all of the paperwork. There is no mandate that they have to charge it and most states cap the amount that can be charged. I'm not sure if CT has a cap, but a quick look shows most dealers in CT charge around $299 which is high to me, but reasonable compared to this guy. You can negotiate this.
"Vintage" fee is not something I have ever heard of. This is probably some kind of dealer add-on like VIN etching. Don't pay this for any reason.
The registration fee will cover the transfer of title, registering the car and the plates. You should be able to look this fee up at the state DMV. It is illegal for them to charge more then the state established fees for these items.
If it was me, I wouldn't pay anything but tax and registration. If the dealer needs to pad his margin with add-on "fees" then they should just price the car appropriately.
