Can you tell the difference between a '04 and '05 Mustang? Or an '08 and '09 Mustang. Is there any difference?
'04 to '05 yes.
'08-'09...no.

Nice-looking Mustang. They sure were popular when introduced.

Here is an example of two lookalike cars. I took this photo in a parking lot. The emblems on the grilles have been blanked out (notice how similar the grilles are?). No way would I know what these two cars are without reading the emblems...

A few months ago, whenever I drove one of my '60s or '70s cars, I would park next to a modern one as a comparison.

Here is a good example of a tasteful front end and a "blah" one.

My '69 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham next to some kind of Honda. The designers didn't spend much time with the Honda's "grille" (if you can call it that!).

It sure was nice when cars were well-detailed. More comparison photos coming up later.

So in other words there wasn't much of a differance.

That is a Kia Forte and 8th gen Accord.

I'm 50 and I can tell those cars apart at a glance. They aren't even from the same country of origin.

I can tell because they have completely different grilles, completely different headlights, completely different body lines on the sides, completely differnt side window shapes. The only thing they have in common is 4 wheels and color. They aren't even the same size.

There are more differences between them than there is between a '30 Ford and a '30 Chevy, that's for sure.

Completely different grilles?

Maybe, but not more than a '57 Ford and a '57 Chevy or a '65 Ford and a '65 Chevy. Interesting that you had to go back to the '30s to find cars that looked similar.

I think we are well aware that styling is virtually unchanged for a few years. I never tried to argue that point. I can tell you what gen they are. You argue that all new cars look the same. I disagree. If you want to say the exact same car within the same gen looks the same I'd say no kidding.

That's pretty good. Now can you tell me the year of each of those cars?
Well, it's nearly impossible to tell the exact year from those photos. I will give you that modern car "generations" tend to run at least around 3 years or so without major styling changes where you could easily identify the differences in the pictures you posted. Most of the running changes are generally limited to option packages and rims. However, I do know the general time period for each of those cars...

1. 2011+ Hyundai Sonata
2. 2001-2005 Toyota Camry
3. 2006-2010 BMW 3-series
4. 2004-2007 Chevy Malibu
5. 2007-2010 Mercedes C-class
6. 2006-2009 Lexus ES

Quote:
I can easily do that with the Dodges I posted in post #361... a 1967 Dart, 1967 Monaco and 1968 Charger.
OK, what year is this car...

How about this one...

The 2004 and 2005 have radically different styling. The differences between a 2008 and 2009 are minimal unless you get into options packages. The only real difference on the exterior is that the 2009's have a 45th anniversary badge.
