If someone is tailgating me to the point I think they are trying to 'send me a message" I send then one by either doing a quick brake check or slowing down to about half of the speed limit. If they still ride my bumper I just slow to a stop ....
Tailgating is stupid but when somebody brake checks now you have two stupid drivers. Slowing down is the best solution.
I only tailgate police cars. When they are speeding along with there lights and siren on, it makes my daily commute so much shorter.
I wouldn't say I tailgate, but I definitely pace any police car or emergency vehicle going faster than the rest of traffic. I keep about 75ft back... do it all the time, never had a lick of trouble. Works great.
OK so I'm driving my old fart car (Maxima) on the 55 mph country road near my house and I'm doing 60 and getting tailgated. Plenty of passing opportunities exist.
But when I'm driving my 5.0 Mustang (with the louder exhaust) on the same 55 mph road doing the same 60 mph nobody ever tailgates me.
Is there some kind of rule that nobody told me about that old folks cars should be tailgated?
I think there is some psychological reason and you have somewhat of a point.
I get tail-gated in traffic around here once in a while in my C6 Z06. In the vast majority of those cases it turned out to be a clueless young gal. I suspect that most guys tend to not tailgate sportscars because they probably realize that if the driver isn't blazing along there is probably a reason and so they chill out.
This makes me see red because that car is so low to the ground you can clearly see traffic in front of the vehicle and the dummy behind you has no clue you can stop in 2/3 their distance.
I used to get tailgated a lot more while driving a basic sedan in similar circumstances.
I had a guy in a beat up car tailgating me (and everyone else) as close as 3 feet the other day. With nowhere to go....he was making me sweat since he likely had no insurance and that car had dents all over it.
If someone is driving at or just over the speedlimit, there's no reason to tailgate. Tailgate me and I will slow down to a crawl.
Depends.
On the interstate, I won't tailgate ANYONE in the slow lane even if they are going 50mph in a 70mph zone. They may be driving on a donut spare or having mech issues.
However, if someone is doing 65 in a 65mph fast lane alongside another vehicle, they deserve to get tailgated.

So what you are saying is you are some how punishing the slow driver by tailgating and putting both cars in danger of a crash which by the way will be your fault.
There is never a good reason to tailgate because unless you are a mind reader you have no idea what the driver in front is about to do.
PDD, just for reference, have you checked either or both speedometers against mile markers? Could be that your Nissan is reading say 55 at more like 50 (not all that uncommon).
Knowing that you are a car enthusiast, probably you have checked - but if not probably the 'stang goes faster so easily, you might be getting tailgated in the Nissan because you are actually going slower in it.
