I have little experience with owning Fords. I have put a wrench on many for friends and family. I love the engine designs of the 60's v8 with the distributor up front. I have done a lot of tune ups on old GM product cursing the rear distributor location. The one Ford inline 6 I have experience with had a rather anemic looking intake and power output to match. Not a fair comparison to the 300 really.
I have owned quite a few 225 slant 6 vehicles. The engines in the darts I drove were bullet proof. While any other part of a car might have issues the engine was not one of them. Anecdotally men around my age pretty much were in consensus that it was really hard to kill a 225. The car might be ugly but it wont die.
i like both engines, the slant six is more suited to pedestrian applications, but its is a decent light truck engine as well.
the 300 is well suited to light and medium duty truck applications, and industrial applications.
they are both long running and tough motors. both make good race motors as well with the 300 edging the 225 in most classes. the chevy 250 is also a very good motor and a better race motor than the other two, though not by much.
in the end drop a cover over all three engines and pick one, they all get the job done.
my personal preference is for the 300, but then i am a ford guy first.
300 in my Dads old 84 was a great engine. HAd clod=se to 200000 on it when the oil pump let go. New oil pump and she went another 75000 or so when some guy pulled out in front of him and totaled the truck. In high school our final exam in auto mechanics consisted of several things, including rebuilding an engine. I don't recall the exact engine, but it was a Chevy I6. The ones that made the most HP and torque went into school owned vehicles. Ours went into the schools truck they used to haul the lawn mowers and such around. Saw that truck at my sons graduation, still going, and still running the same engine we built. Granted, it wasn't run much since the 80s, but it had been run. I knew it was ours since we painted it yellow with black oil pan and valve cover.
