Do you think this will become an optional or standard feature on big rigs? They can install a camera in the cab pointed at the road ahead and set it up for easy download to personal device. Advantage is protection from lawsuits when someone causes an accident through careless driving and try to blame the driver of the rig. With the way some drivers operate, I've seriously considered installing a mount for my iPhone to record my daily drive.
This is a good idea, and I have considered this myself at some point. I have a small camcorder that I could easily use for such an event, its just the fact of finding a good mount to use. It will be very valuable to have this in case dumb car drivers causing an accident tries to blame the trucker for their stupidity. Would save the company lots of $$ as well. Driving a big rig nowadays is more of a CYA job more than anything.

You want something like this, or just Google "drive camera". They are cheap and easy to instal.

I am opposed to taking away the American spirit and dream of professionalism. I'm sorry, but become a zombie if you wish. let them stroke you and play in your cab while you drive. Sign a non consent form. give it to your employer. send a copy to your senator. nuff said. American is numbing and dumbing. yes I agree with some safety features but not criminal like surveillance in the cab.. recording every word I say, and watching to see if I blink more than once. read my article.
The question is if there are a LOT of problems with big rigs getting the blame for things they did not do?
If that is a problem, then I should think cameras would be a thing in the future for big rigs.
But so far as I know, the police are currently quite able to determine fault in accidents based on the position of the vehicles after the accident (skid marks, etc.), what each driver says. And what witnesses say.
I should think a bigger problem would be drivers who violate rules / substance abuse. And theft of trucks and what they are hauling. So cameras pointing at the driver and the back of the truck/cargo area I should think would be a bigger concern to insurance companies - those who require such things (or give reduced rates for such things as they reduce claims).
Seems like it could do more harm then good. Start concentrating on the picture in front of you, forget there's a truck there. It slows down, and you run right into the back of it
that's the right answer. all of it is distracting. that is my main defense.. it is very distracting to me as a driver. I will always and forever need an opt out option!
There are allot of owner operators and I doubt that they will install cameras on their Rigs since thy own the truck they can do what they want.
