The only 8 track players I have ever seen become worth anything, are the ones that are factory indash models, i.e. if you find a factory 8 track deck for say....a 1972 Olds Cutlass, it's worth something.....to the guy restoring a '72 Cutlass, back to original. Because now a days people restoring old iron are paying big money for rare hard to find parts.
But all of the aftermarket 8 track decks, depending on who made it, not as much as the factory decks.
Last but not least the tapes themselves, are worth next to nothing.
I have a bunch of old 8 tracks I never listen to anymore. I remember those days, though. Seems everyone had one in their car and at home. Remember having a whole box of tapes with you when you went on a road trip? The biggest drawback was putting it in when it was cold, snapping the tape soon after. I got to be pretty good at splicing.
I have one 8 track I got the other day (ZZ TOP - Eliminator (1983) (I also have this on cassette)) and I tell ya,I would LOVE finding a good player!! (A mono one if possible (I prefer Mono))
8 tracks had terrible sound quality and very bad hiss. Also It was common to hear crosstalk from the other channels.
I used to listen to alot of 8 tracks in the 80s and I iddnt ever hear CROSSTALK..... I wonder if it mattered if the tape wass dirty?? (That might cause this)
I have a table top Craig/Pioneer 8-track player/recorder that I would be glad to sell for $10.
IF the head is adjusted properly, there should be no cross-talk.
The one I have needs cleaned and adjusted, but it works just fine.
I no longer have any tapes, though, I sold all three boxes to an old guy for $60 (about $.50 each). He was glad to get them. A couple of them were new in the original wrapper, and there was one blank tape.
