If I purchased a vehicle and did not notify DMV (California) within 10 days, what's gonna happen?

Extra fine when you go to tell 'em. I take it this is a used vehicle. If the seller did their half of the bargain correctly, they notified the DMV within 5 days of the sale, so there's no way to fib your way out of it. But, if for some reason the seller didn't do their part, there's really no way of knowing when you actually bought the car.........

i hear california has the death penalty for things like this(yes its a funny state, lol). all seriousness aside, it is usually a fine of some sort, and even that can be waived if there is a good reason to.

The only time the ten day limit comes into play is if a cop stops you. No cop, no harm, no foul...
Just go register it and forget it...!!

To be honest, I do not have direct experience with this from buying and selling. But CA DMV has the same 10-Day rule registering vehicles from out of state. I was a couple days late, but filled out the form honestly when it asked when we arrived in CA. I cannot remember the figure, but when the agent told me the total, I was floored. She handed me back the form, said 'I think you wrote the wrong date here', winked, and had me revise it. It went down by a good bit. I would guess it'd be the same for buying/selling. Sucks that they would basically fine someone for being honest, but there you go.

Go register it asap and if a question comes up about why you waited so long, tell them this was the first opportunity that you had to pick up the vehicle since you bought it to bring it in to register.
