Thanks everyone for the replies. I guess I'll definitely do the water pump and spark plugs and talk to the mechanic to see if there's anything else I should change. There's no way I'm doing this myself for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that I'm not mechanically inclined at all. I got my first quote a few weeks ago and they said between $800-1200. I plan on getting 2 or 3 more quotes before going ahead with the job. I know I'll have to trust the shop to be honest with me to some extent but i think I've found some shops on the island that get favorable reviews on Yelp so I'll try those. I just hope I can somehow get this done for cheaper than $800 but I'm not holding my breath as everything is so expensive here.
