If I had an expensive car or a collector's item, I guess I'd install a stealth car gps system. I don't know if this is the best one but it looks good: Vehicle Recovery | Anti Theft Device | Anti Theft System

Has anyone here used a car gps tracking system to help with car theft? Which system did you use and how did it work out?

Had an earlier version, but the communications problem remains - no cell signal, no tracking.

Never heard of that....I have heard of Lo jack....IIRC i believe it sends you a text that someone jacked your car, then the cops are tipped off as to where it's at....provided the cops have the Lo Jack tracking capabilities....and even more so, providing said cops actually care.

LoJack uses it's own transmitter system that not all PD's have, and it's such a weak signal - only goes out over a few miles - that any cheap rig can block it. It's not been tremendously successful...

If LoJack's not good then the system I recommended is better.

No one said Lo Jack wasn't good.....just one individual gave his opinion.

LoJack uses an FM transmitter and can be more effective than some of the satellite-based systems that need to triangulate a position. LoJack maintains something like a 90% recovery rate, and is most effective against the regular thief, not the professional who has the wherewithal to defeat the system. Insurance companies, like mine, give a discount for LoJack, and if it were ineffective, they would not do so -- a significant discount, actually, in a high theft market like New York City.

Also, I believe LoJack supplies the police departments with the equipment to recover the vehicles, so it is at no cost to taxpayers, and is built into the cost of the unit price when installed in a vehicle. And, the LoJack transmitter is more easily hidden in the vehicle, as it does not have to be installed in a few locations, and does not rely on cellular technology to transmit as some systems do.

There's good and bad with many systems, and a professional thief can likely defeat most systems. However, I would talk to your insurance agent and purchase the one that gets you the best discount.

For my cars I always buy GPS tracking systems from Technology Services Company. The cars are really expensive so I'd rather spend money on GPS tracking then will get some stolen.
