My 1st P-car was my "only" for several years, and I wasn't about to repair anything on the kitchen table...

I like having two cars, however having two nice cars can be a pain at times. I like being able to park my E36 outside and not care too much.

I had two cars for several years and it was nice to have a back up when I was fixing or modding one of them, but that was also the problem. I was constantly working on them.

I like having multiple cars, with cars serving individual roles. I have 3 right now, but I've had as many as 5-6 at once in the past. But, I like cars, and make sure than my life circumstances support multiple cars and a place to work on the ones I want to work on.

Replace M-B with Audi, then maybe follow with Porsche.

If I were spending $25K for a car now, I might consider the Golf GTI.

If I were spending $50K, I'd probably shop Audi before BMW or M-B.

If I were spending $125K or more, I'd choose between an Audi R8 and Porsche Carrera S or Turbo.

Sorry but no current BMWs truly appeal to me. I think I could drive an S-Class if I wanted a big solid sedan.

I love comments that throw VW into the blah category, which follows with Audi being thrown up next to Mercedes. I know there are vast differences in model design, particularly with offerings like the R8 and A5. But when you consider commonality of parts, sensors, engines, transmissions, wheel design, etc etc etc there's very little that really separates the two brands (although it's getting further away as VW cheapens some models). In the previous guise, there was little separating the Golf/A3, Jetta/A4, Passat/A6, Phaeton/A8 except the price tags and the availability of AWD. There was also common architecture, but the Golf/Jetta/A3 were on one chassis, while the A4/Passat were on another, and the Phaeton and A8 shared a very similar chassis if memory serves me right. Engines are essentially offered across all lineups too, minus a naturally aspirated 2.5L Inline 5 in the VW lineup...a turbocharged and direct injected version of that engine does live in the Audi Lineup though in the TT.
