We're planning on moving to extreme northern Maine in the next year and a half to two years. We definitely will need something with 4 wheel drive. We've got an Explorer now that hubby loves but no 4x4.
Anyone have suggestions on a 2000 or newer - but NOT new - SUV for under $10,000? Want something reliable as we'll be down to one vehicle in the winter months. Miatas I'm guessing won't be too great in 2 feet of snow.
late model chevy tahoe are solid easy to work on, find parts for and any independant mechanic can work on them so you won't get gouged by dealers.

I've owned Jeep Grand Cherokees since the first one in '93. They've been the most reliable, toughest vehicles I've ever owned. Put over 150,000 on the last one and now have an '05 with just 50,000 on it. Looking foward to many more years with it. My son has a Cherokee and a Grand Cherokee. Both great trucks.
My choosing would be a Tahoe, Powerstroke Excursion or a 4.0 Cherokee. The Tahoe is a great all-around truck IMO, great reliability, easy/cheap to repair, versatile, etc. The Excursion is just an absolute monster and will tackle just about any amount of snow you put in front of it and with the powerstroke you won't be hurting too bad on fuel and have the option to convert to veggie. I have a soft spot for the old Cherokees as well, especially 5spd. They are awesome little machines that are pretty easy on fuel consumption.
if you like your Explorer you might like the 2008 sport-trac it is built off the explorer chasis and give you a SUV size interior and a little pick-up truck bed in back
another model to check out that can be had for a pretty decent price used is the little larger chevrolet avalanche.

LOL I think the excursion is over kill unless the OP plans on towing horse trailers or 32' power boats and needs seating for 8 people.
thet expedition is a good alternative to the excursion but it would need the 5.4 triton to be worth it as the base 4.6 V-8 is a little underpowered for that SUV.

Just my opinion. Size doesn't matter to me, fuel consumption does. The powerstroke Excursion is more efficient than the Tahoe and maybe only a few mpg less than the Cherokee.
I always suggest the Honda CRV. We have had a 2000 that gave us zero problem and never got stuck. Now my bro has my Moms 2006 CRV and yet again zero problems. Northern Indiana winters get pretty bad, not as bad as the Northeast, but pretty bad and this thing blast through snow like it's nothing.
