They do that because they want a new car, not necessarily because there's something wrong with the 3 year old car. I buy the 3 year old cars and drive them for 10 years or more.

And for every positive anecdotal, there's a negative. The Exact vehicle/engine you're describing was what my folks gave me to go to college. They bought it new, took care of it and before 80k miles it blew a head gasket, made a milkshake and *shocker* several bottom end bearings failed. Ok, factory new engine replacement, same problem within 20k miles. It was sold for scrap value (which was the best we could get for it).

*shrug* Wasn't me, I've nearly 250k miles on a "troublesome" VW Jetta... that, ironically, has had NO troubles. And no surprise here, but nearly 200k on a 97 Toyota truck too. The secret? Pre-Purchase Inspection by a specialist of the vehicle and routine maintenance. Nothing more. And yes, I've spent ~$500 on inspections for vehicles I walked away from because they had issues.

If people buy new cars every 3 years, my wife and I are 3 and 4 cycles behind the curve (bought the Toy 12 years ago, and the VW 9 years ago). Unsurprisingly, no plans on replacing either anytime in the near future. Certainly not within the next 3 years, though maybe the car will see replacement in 5 or 6 years.
