I don't care who's ahead of me - that's a bit of projection, I suspect, on the part of someone who DOES care and thus thinks lane splitting is a good way to do it. If you want to pass me using an actual lane, go for it. I care, as I said, about dangerous riders making motorcycles and their riders look bad - it gives bikes a bad name and I resent that. Having been involved with motorcycles for a LONG time, I also am pretty familiar with the attitude that really lane splits, and it has nothing to do with making traffic "better".
I used to do it when I was living in Austin TX, and stuck in rush hour traffic where traffic would just be at a standstill. When it's summer time and 100+ degrees out, sitting on a hot bike, sweating in your helmet, yeah, I would lane split to get ahead, even though it wasn't legal in TX. Most bikers did.
I would never lane split while in moving traffic though, simply because cagers generally have no clue what's going on around them. But if everyone is stopped, then there's little or no danger, going 20-25 between the cars.
You know what, every time a motor-cyclist hits traffic on the streets their risk of imminent death skyrockets. Its just one of those unwavering facts of driving, it's a dangerous endeavor. Why not allow them to remove their helmets? Split the lanes? Do quarter mile wheelies? Do 150 mph down an open road? I mean... ever ride could be their last and they deserve a "last meal" treatment of sorts. Rarely do cyclists harm 4 wheelers, so whats the problem? Every year I am connected by a couple degrees of separation to a few motorcycle deaths and rarely are they do anything but normal driving (or so it is reported)... may as well lighten up the laws more so they can get the most out of the ride.
I lane split when there's traffic. Please let me know what my attitude is towards lane splitting and cars in general. Hint: it's not about you.
I'm not sure why you think you speak for everybody, but from what I've experienced, most drivers here in CA don't care. Actually, many move over to make extra room.
Just seeing if I can get an average answer. I notice some people move over to block me (futile efforts), and some move over to give me more room. Your thoughts?
I dont mind it at all as long as its a stop and go traffic situation and the bikers are safely going up the middle, just one of the advantages of riding a bike, those malcontents who block bikers from doing this are total A,,holes. Lane splitting at speed i'm not so tolerant of but i'm certainly not going to make maneuvers that will jeopardize the safety of the biker
If my car had the technology and I could get away with it, I'd vaporize lane splitters on sight.
Your car already has the technology,as the biker is passing you could move over and squash him dead, why you would do this or derive pleasure from the death of the motorcyclist is a question only you and your therapist can answer..

See my answer just above this.
