When incremental weather happens, or at dusk, why do some people not turn on their headlights?
I've been running into this problem ever since I moved, and I don't understand it. I can understand that it's a case of forgetting, but there are some people that just don't understand that they might be able to see us, but we cannot see them. I was driving on the highway in pouring rain and some fog and several vehicles didn't have their headlights on and I just barely saw them. Automatic headlights (that sense night / day) don't always come on when you think they should, so it's a manual job to turn the switch on, which really isn't that hard.
This can cause accidents and putting your life & other peoples lives at risk because they didn't see you. What I mean is, if someone doesn't see you and pulls out into the road and get's hit.
I don't understand it either. Turning on your lights was one of those things that was blasted into my brain since I first stepped in a vehicle. If it's anything less than a sunny clear day, I was told to have my headlights on.
I think maybe some people just see it in a very black and white way. Day = no headlights. Night = headlights on.
What really gets me is overcast days when the roads are wet but it's not raining. So it's dark, with road-spray, but only like 1/4 of the drivers have their lights on, absolute madness in heavy traffic on the interstate. COME ON, TURN THEM ON, PEOPLE!
My leading causes:
1. Daytime running lights
2. Driving long distance through different weather and forgetting
3. Natural human stubbornness
I also think, during iffy conditions, people just do not think of what would help others. Not that they are being malicious, they just do not see it from other driver's points of view.
They require it to be dark, for the need to have lights on to slap them over the head.
Even then, some don't.
