I have a 2003 Toyota Rav4 and sometimes when I put the gear into drive it'll do something different, usually the car will go into reverse. We called Toyota and they said the part we needed was called a shift/ shifter cable. Problem is we cannot find it ANYWHERE.
If anyone knows where I can find this part (preferably somewhere other than Toyota) or if I should look into a different problem please let me know!
Do you know that all automatic cars are confirgured like this?
P-R-N-D-etc.
So, if you count the clicks back 3 times you should be in drive. Sometimes Your plastic trim pieces get loose and move and the correct gear selection isnt highlighted...
NewHavensFinest- I've done that and it's hit or miss; I've noticed that the light goes on but it just won't drive lol. My car, like it doesn't click it's more like 1 smooth movement so I've even thought maybe I think I've put it in drive and it's in the middle but I've paid close attention to that since it first happened.
Does it go in gear at all? do you hear the clicking? Do you have to be aggressive and throw the shifter back and forth?
Do you have to hit the gas for the transmission to engage?
If it goes in gear something could be loose, if it doesnt go in gear something came disconnected... Like a cotter pin or a clip or something.
Did the dealer mention any recalls? If you called them and they knew what you were talking about its probably a common problem and you should let them deal with it at this point.
They did know, I guess I'll have to take it to Toyota; it just sucks that diagnostics is 80, plus 211 for the peice plus whatever the mechanic will charge- luckily it doesn't have to be a Toyota mechanic!
Thanks!
