Um, JaxRhapsody, that's an urban legend. I've seen it years ago in books on urban legends AND on Snopes.com. Sorry.

I'd love to try it. It's so freaky! ahaha.

A couple summers ago we were driving around in the Adirondacks when we got locked on to by this family in a Prius. It was just us and them on the road and they were obviously using adaptive cruise control. We'd dial our cruise up, dial it back down, they always stayed right behind us, perfectly spaced. We were like

Adaptive cruise control can be fooled on a curved four-lane highway.

A vehicle in the other lane going your way can appear to the system to be directly in front of you.

YMMV of course.

Yep!! There's nothing quite as exciting as having your brakes slam on when the sensor "detects" a vehicle coming the other way or a Jersey barrier or some other fixed object!

Thanks for the responses. I also will never have another car without cruise control. I also live out West where there is miles and miles of nothing and the speed limit is 75 or 80 outside urban areas. I find that Adaptive CC sounds very interesting as you are not having to step on the brakes when getting "boxed in". Certainly, it is NOT to be used in heavy traffic or bad weather. That is stupid, IMHO.

If that car speeds up, so will you, up to your cruise set. It's my favorite feature of the car.
Sounds great! I also will never buy another car that doesn't have cruise control. I actually use cruise the majority of the time that I drive over 25 mph. My cars cruise control is very responsive, so I just decelerate or accelerate with my hands by pressing the speed up or down button on the cruise control. Each click is exactly 1 mph. The engine runs much smoother this way & I'm less likely to speed.

Now that it's 4 years later, what do people think of ACC? Does it still have the weaknesses mentioned in this thread? Do some automakers have better fully adaptive CC than others? Can you use it in heavy traffic? Bad weather?

Works perfect. There's no way I would ever go back.
Now there's full speed adaptive cruise filtering to mainstream carmakers and luxury cars are offering steering capabilities as well.
