We were sitting at a red light, third in line, for about a full minute, when a car coming up behind us and hit us hard. I was able to prevent my car from running into the car ahead of us. Turns out that it was a teen driver. Got her name and text number. There's a little ding in the rear door, but no other obvious damage. I haven't been able to look underneath to see if there was hidden damage. I'm debating whether to just forget this, or follow up with her insurance.
You have already done a great favor to the offender by not calling the police. Something I would not have done. I bet she left the accident and texted again within 3 minutes
Are you serious. Of course follow up. It is actually supposed to be reported. In our state it is against the law not to report an accident, unless it is private property.

It's not against the law here. However, I will probably just go ahead and contact their insurance.
I was rear ended once and it appeared that there was som scuff marks that I could have buffed out. I called the cops anyway to report it. WHen I told the girl I was calling them she said well if you drove a truck like a guy is suppossed to there wouldnt be any damage at all, lol. I got a police report and filed it...those scuff marks turned into over $2000 worth of damage that I would have never known about.
Sometimes when you are involved in an accident you may feel fine afterwards but the next day your neck or something may be sore and you as well as the car may have more damage than you are aware of. Not saying to be sue happy but its good to have that police report just in case you did mess up your neck or something.
I would also have filed regardless just because she was texting. Some people will never learn unless they get busted. Im sure she will do it again and next time it may be more serious.
