What is your favorite top of the line luxury car built in 1969?

1969 Mercedes Benz 600. That'd be my choice.

I would like to drive or ride in one of those for comparison purposes.

But I'm pretty sure I would prefer a '69 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham or Fleetwood Seventy-Five Limousine. Bigger engine, more power, longer length, great '60s styling and a smoother ride.

Of those, I would pick a '69 Cadillac. Either a Fleetwood Seventy-Five Limousine or a Fleetwood Brougham.

From the cars on the list, I would pick a Chrysler New Yorker or a Dodge Monaco. Although a Olds 98 would be tempting, too. I have a Motor Trend (July, 1969) road test of a New Yorker, Olds 98 and Mercury Marquis Brougham...

---------------------------- New Yorker------- Olds 98------------ Mercury Marquis

Engine/horsepower---------- 440/375---------- 455/365------------ 429/320
Torque--------------------- 480--------------- 510---------------- 460
Compression ratio----------- 10.1:1------------ 10.25:1------------ 10.5:1
Axle ratio------------------- 3.23:1------------ 2.56:1------------- 2.75:1
Curb weight----------------- 4,390 lbs--------- 4,510 lbs----------- 4,396 lbs

Wheelbase/length----------- 124"/224.7"------- 127"/224.4"--------- 124"/224.3"

0-30 mph------------------- 3.2 secs---------- 3.3 secs------------ 3.6 secs
0-60 mph------------------- 8.0--------------- 9.5----------------- 9.0
0-75 mph------------------- 12.4-------------- 13.8---------------- 13.0

1/4 mile-------------------- 15.7@90.6 mph---- 16.5@86.8 mph----- 16.4@87.1 mph

Passing:40-60 mph---------- 4.1 sec----------- 5.2 sec------------- 5.0 sec
------- 50-70 mph---------- 4.5 sec----------- 6.2 sec------------- 5.2

Speed in gears @ rpm
1st------------------------- 56 mph@4600 rpm- 59 mph@4600 rpm-- 55 mph@4400 rpm
2nd------------------------- 94 mph@4600 rpm- 97 mph@4600 rpm-- 94 mph@4400 rpm
3rd------------------------- 92 mph@3500 rpm- 93 mph@3000 rpm-- 99 mph@3500 rpm
--------------------------- (not top speeds, obviously)

Fuel mileage---------------- 9.5-12.3 mpg------- 11.4-14.1 mpg----- 10.1-12.5 mpg

The Olds 98 runs a relatively good 1/4 mile considering the tall 2.56:1 axle ratio.
And the New Yorker topping 90 mph in the 1/4 mile is very good for such a big car.
I'm surprised to see how well the Marquis did in the performance runs considering it was the 2 barrel version of the 429 instead of the 4 barrel version, too bad they didn't test the 4 barrel version, I'm even surprised to see the Ninety Eight being the slowest despite it having 45bhp more than the Marquis, I agree the New Yorker had a very impressive score in the quarter mile runs,

Well, the Marquis had a 4-bbl; you can tell by the high (10.5:1) compression ratio. I don't know why it was rated at only 320 hp. Maybe a typo?

I thought the 429ci 4 barrel had 360hp and the 429 2 barrel had 320hp.

I don't know. I'm not that familiar with Fords. Maybe a Ford guy here would know for sure.

But I think you're right. I checked a Chilton's Service Manual and it shows for the 1969 Mercury Marquis...

Engine----- Compression ratio-- Horsepower------ Torque

429-------- 10.5:1------------ 320@4400 rpm---- 460 lbs-ft@2200 rpm
429-------- 11.0:1------------ 360@4600 rpm---- 476 lbs-ft@2800 rpm

It looks like it was an error in the Motor Trend test.

Since 1969 is one of my all time favorite years of the automotive industry I have a hard time deciding which car I've posted to be my favorites but if I had to choose three it'll be the

Mercury Marquis
Oldsmobile Ninety Eight
Pontiac Bonneville

what would I give for them to build cars like this again? I wish they kept on with the high compression engines much later than after the 1970 model year.

My mom had an Olds and I can give you a direct comparison between the Grand Marquis and the Olds- the Grand Marquis is a much better driving car and tons quieter on the road. Make mine a Grand Marquis.
Anybody remember the Grand Marquis blind test where they blindfolded riders and had them ride in the Grand Marquis and other luxury cars of the day? They also has commercials about the ride quality using a glass of water. It was an advanced car back in the day.
you gotta be kidding me about the 1969 Marquis's being the better luxury car than the Caddies of the same era, I also thought the 1969 Marquis looked a lot better and more luxurious looking than the 1969 Lincoln, I remember the commercial with them blindfolding people and having them ride in the Marquis, that was for the 1971 Marquis and they were surprised that they were riding in a Mercury instead of a more upscale car.

I'll take the Marquis. Love the design and it comes from the makers of the Lincoln Continental.

I never knew the Marquis came from the same makers as the Lincoln Continental, I knew they were trying to compete with Lincoln rather than Ford with the Marquis and succeeded greatly, even the '69 Monterey looked more luxurious than the previous Monterey's.
