Didn't Nisan buy the Datsun company years ago?

I don't even see older Z's anymore.

Remember when you couldn't throw a rock 5 ft without hitting a 270z? They were everywhere.

My understanding is it was always Nisan... Datsun was a name for the American Market...

It is interesting that Nisan, BMW, American Austin/Bantam and a French auto maker Rosengart all trace their lineage to Sir Edwin Austin of England...

What was the Fiat they imported in the 70s/80s?

Someone here has a 2 door white one and uses it as a daily driver. It has no rear bumper that I'm aware of but I don't remember seeing rust. It even still has the dealer badge from the Pontiac/Cadillac dealer here who sold the Fiats back then.

Rust - Japanese cars were not properly galvanized until the 1980s (or even 1990s for some). Plus a lot of those cars weren't well taken care of then, some people beat them up and saw them as "expendable."

Yup. They are being babied, the ones in good shape that are still out there (and there are more than you might think)

Nissan has reintroduced the Datsun nameplate for secondary markets like South Africa as a line of cheaper cars. It gets going later this year.

The dreaded tin worm (rust) reared its ugly head. Datsuns of the 60's and 70's used a thin gauge of steel back then. It's too bad, my neighbor had a modified Datsun 510 that could perform just as well as a BMW 2002 of the same vintage.
