The I35 and ES300 did not distinguish themselves too much from their counterparts Maxima and the Camry back then.
Not to mention, weren't the base TL under $30k back then?
The TL started at a little under $29k. The I35 started at a little under $30k and the ES started around $31k. I believe the TL though, as is typical for Acura had a much longer standard equipment list then the others and fully loaded had a distinct price advantage. I think the ES even then topped out at near $40k, which was a good deal pricier then the other two.

I35 was just a Maxima with makeup and a different outfit. Same with the ES300/Camry and TL/Accord. Back then they all shared a good majority of parts with their more modest siblings. All brands have since done a much batter job of differentiating their luxury brands from the base ones but they are still at least cousins.

Only because I LOVED my Legend, and RL I will have to vote Honda/Acura on this one. Especially if you can get a TL-S.

I choose the TL.I am a Honda fan,so this is the natural choice. As someone else said, the Infiniti is just a wasrmed over Maxima. Not a bad car,but why not just get the Maxima?(I know nothing about engine choices, options, etc. My choice here is on styling and reputation.)I never cared for Toyota.
I have actually recently considered a used TL of that generation, but I can't justify getting rid of a perfectly good Accord right now.

I would choose a Lexus but not the ES series. The ES series is an over priced Camry. The correct car to use for this comparison should have been a GS.

No, at the time the TL/I35 compared favorably with the ES.

The ES was a family car. If not the GS then the IS. Even today the ES is a family car. Its the most common Lexus car being re-sold on Craigslist.

GS was much larger, IS was smaller(and RWD). ES was the direct comparasion to the TL

I'm surprised more folks didn't choose the Lexus. However I can see the appeal of the Type S TL, it looks great. What really gets me is the margin between the Lexus and the Acura. Infiniti kind of always seems to be off the side, I'll be the first to admit that. When I was looking at these three because I wanted a car from that year/give or take a couple and one of these three models I chose the I35 because it had the performance with a soft touch of luxury, it obviously isn't as luxurious as the Lexus but I think it's a good competitor for the money. The 3.5 is a rocket, 255 ponies and I can easily cruise onto the freeway. My only fault with this car is the 4 speed auto transmission, it should have been a 5 speed by then.
