I've found these polls to be quite fun. Lets go back to the year 2002. Your in the market for a car and you've narrowed it down to these three; Acura TL, Infiniti I35, Lexus ES300. Which would you choose and why?
Ill take the TL Type S, its the most "sporty" looking. The Lexus just looks liek something my grandmother would drive, and I am indifferent about the Infinity
STAY AWAY from an automatic TL of that era (stick is okay). My mom has one. It is a great car, powerful, and very comfortable to drive. But the transmission failed, costing her a complete rebuild. It is a known problem of that generation TL.
Still they compare very well to towehr in eve transmisson slie my wifes who never has problems but of course serviced the fluid. I know alot who had problems with GM 350's but I never did because I service mine.
Having to pick between those three, the Acura TL Type-S with a manual trans would be my choice. It's the most sporting and put together of the options and hits all the right buttons to play at being a sport sedan. The I35 got the VQ35 that year, but was automatic only and wasn't the best handler in the world and experienced a plethora of torque steer and wasn't as well appointed as the TL or ES. The ES300 is a good, solid car and that year was the beginning of when they became more distinct from the Camry roots. However, that was also the year that followed the intro of the IS300 and Lexus took every ounce of sporting ambition out of the ES300 and basically out-Buicked Buick for "most sedate driving experience".
I would take the TL as well.
The I35 and ES300 did not distinguish themselves too much from their counterparts Maxima and the Camry back then.
Not to mention, weren't the base TL under $30k back then?
The TL would be my choice but as stated by others, only with a manual transmission as the auto's are known to fail at a fairly high rate. From a styling viewpoint, it has stood the test of time better than the others. The I35 would be a distant second for me and I wouldn't even look at the ES.
