With some vehicles the odometer will light up when you open the door.
Others you need to power it up(turn the ignition switch)
Most OBDII need the ignition to be on for power.
but your INS, has better tools, like the dealer has that can read the contents of the computer without power from the vehicle.
I use my h'/c gauge all the time, unlike idiot lights it can give you a heads up to many different problems and save you from some very costly repairs too
