(1) I recently damaged my car so that the key could not be turned. But the insurance people went to my car to read the odometer. It's an electronic odometer. How did they read it, since you can't activate the car? The figure they reported seemed accurate.

(2) What do you usually use the h/c gauge for, and do you use it very often? Reminds me of an earlier thread about the RPM gauge. Very few people use it, and only when you're in trouble.

some cars the mileage can be read with a tool they plug in to the obd port. You use the gauge to keep track of how your engine is running. It will tell you if its starting to run hot or over head. I constantly moniter all my gauges, all though most of them are "dummy gauges" they just sit in the middle to give you the apperence everything is perfect. If the gauges showed actual data people may get "scared" that the temp is not right in the middle

What's h/c gauge. Hot-cold?
Buy Scangauge. Will tell you everything about your car. Or Ultra gauge.

With some vehicles the odometer will light up when you open the door.
Others you need to power it up(turn the ignition switch)

Most OBDII need the ignition to be on for power.
but your INS, has better tools, like the dealer has that can read the contents of the computer without power from the vehicle.

I use my h'/c gauge all the time, unlike idiot lights it can give you a heads up to many different problems and save you from some very costly repairs too
