Automatic, FWD NISSAN MAXIMA.

The chattering noise you hear is the car idling then you'll hear the hissing grinding noise (at :25) when I put it into gear.

The car drives and has no trouble putting into gear.

When I accelerate, the loud noise goes away. Only when I come to a stop will the noise loud again.

No noise in neutral or park. Only when I put it in Reverse or Drive.

Could it be the belts? I had those replaced a few months ago. Dirty transmission fluid? Other?

Do you even have transmission fluid in it?

Hmm. At this point, I'm guessing you have a problem with the torque converter, since you only hear the sound when the car is in gear.

Low on oil
Lifters stuck.

We have Infinity in the family, and that sob is not just taking, no chugging on oil, but is super sensitive to oil level and pressure. It will make that chatter, even worse, the very moment oil level drops down.
Son checks on it every other week. Totally ruined my opinion on Nissans. They have combo of tappets and oil lifters, lifters are tiny, get stuck easy.

Oh, sorry. As of the lifters. Pour can of Seafoam inside the engine oil, and drive on it for several hundred miles, then change oil.

skip the sea~foam as the tapping sound is not coming from the lifters.

It would not have that skip if it was.
The ticking sounds to be from some emission equipment.

I forgot to mention, I had an catalytic converter error code that I drove with for awhile till I get it fixed.

The check engine error light went away minutes before this happened.

Well, you've been warned.

Btw, generally speaking, having year and mileage posted helps a lot. Though my son's Infinity has only 40 or so thousand miles on it.

If I were you, I'd have had this posted in any decent Nissan forum. THAT helps more than scatchy opinions here.

Oh, and you know why that noise goes away when you get her into gear? The tapping noise? Because oil pressure goes up and pops lifters in tappets.
Now, where the other noise comes from when you engage a gear, that I do not know. I don't like guessing. But I am guessing quite confidently that this Nissan needs a lot of TLC, or you looking at major trouble coming soon.
Not to forget. Cut a piece of garden hose, and use it as stethoscope to pin point the noise origin. If it's coming from valve cover - well, ain't no emissions system.
