My car has them, 94 Mazda Protege, and I love them. I never have to think about that, I just get in, shut the door and the seat-belt happens. It's never uncomfortable and works just fine.

You cannot forget to buckle up, so you can't get a ticket for that, which might be why they aren't available anymore. Cities and municipalities MUST have their revenues ya know.

With 30+ years of mandatory seat belt laws I don't think many people "forget" to buckle up anymore.

My 91 Lumina has not automatic seat belts, but a sytem where you can keep the belt/shoulder harness buckled and still get in and out of the car, anchored in the door.

How difficult is it to fasten your own seatbelt?

A lot of cars with automatic seat belts actually only had automatic shoulder harnesses and the lap belt was still manual. In those cars, many people neglected to put the lap belt on. I had a friend with a car like this and he never put his lap belt on. Admittedly, I was guilty of the same thing when riding in the car.

This is correct. I had a 94 Escort with those belts and driver side only airbag.

That matches what I remember. It is unsafe to have just a shoulder belt on.

My thoughts exactly. Does the car have to do everything for you?

How can someone who is responsible enough to drive forget to buckle up? If my three year old son can chant "Seat belts! Seat belts!" when we get in the car you would think adults could remember.

Yep. I was t-boned by a driver this past summer. He was driving an old Nissan Sentra with the automatic shoulder harness, but he didn't have his lap belt on. He slid under the shoulder harness in the collision. He died from internal injuries. If he would have had the lap belt on, his chances might have been better.
