I have seen posts that Pontiac, Hummer and Saturn may be sacked.
GM is a humongous company. Wouldn't it make more sense if they consolidated the companies and focus upon making cars that can be superior to foreign imports.
Just like the Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep line. Shouldn't they consolidate into fewer lines and concentrating on engineering more fuel efficient cars that are also more reliable.
Right now they're just in a fight for their survival. After that's taken care of, then they can focus their energy on R&D. As for consolidation, that's kind of the point of getting rid of some of these brands. The point of sacking Saturn and paring down Pontiac to a niche brand is to eliminate product redundancy, and the point of sacking Hummer is to get rid of a brand that flies in the face of current fuel-efficiency trends. The point of sacking Saab is simply to shed itself of a money loser and hopefully raise a small bit of cash.
I'm not sure Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep is such a good example. For one, they're practically more of a hedge fund company than a car company. For another, they just latched on to Fiat in part so that Fiat can more easily reintroduce more of its product line to North America (Fiat is the ultimate parent company of Ferrari and Maserati, both of which are already sold here.) So Chrysler's product line is likely to expand in the next decade, not consolidate. Also look for Alfa Romeos to be sold through Chrysler dealerships in the next decade.
