"2003 Honda Accord, 4 cylinder, 140,000 miles. Intermittently, especially when the car sits overnight, you get a slight clicking sound when you try to start the car--won't start. The click is coming from the left front where your foot would rest. The battery and starter have been tested and are good. The car will start after about 10 minutes."
Maintained perfectly. Asking for a friend. Thanks!
I first would test the battery with a voltmeter. A fully charged battery is 12.75 volts.
And I would check with a voltmeter to see if the starter was getting the start signal or not when the key is turned to start. If yes, then check the large electrical cables to the starter from the battery and the large engine/body ground wire for clean tight connections.
If not, then get a factory electrical wiring diagrams manual from the dealer and troubleshoot the starting electrical system with a multimeter.
Battery, Bat cables, Alternator, starter are all good--tested by a pro mechanic. I just thought it was a common issue that someone would recognize. Intermittent problems are tough to diagnose I realize.
Is starter on the same side click is coming from? Hondas used to have main relay in the dash, right in front of driver left knee. That was supposed to click 3 times, turning on fuel pump and ignition, before you were able to start the car. Sorta right where you describe it.
Here's well of knowledge on all Honda related problems:
The starter is actually in the front and center of the engine compartment. But the relay you describe sounds like it could be the problem. I'll check it out. Thanks
