Isn't anybody else a little tired of hearing about German superiority.
Those guys are still 0-2 when it comes to World Wars. They are not as smart as they think they are.
I think the issue is starting wars on numerous fronts when your enemies are surrounding you...so, I won't ask Germany to plan a military campaign...even though, they were fairly successful the second time around, for a while. Building quality roads and designing high speed, purpose built cars on the other hand...yeh, i like that part.
I have been on German Autobahns. American driving habits are not that suitable for such high speeds. People dont talk on cellphones while driving in Germany. People dont eat/drink while driving there. People are more disciplined on Left Lanes/Right lanes issue. getting Driving License and Automobile inspection is more stringent there. We should focus on expanding our Interstate Highway system rather then increasing Speed Limits.
FWIW - Have any of you drive around Boston recently? The posted speeds on the I-93 is 65 dropping to 55. Most RIGHT lane traffic is doing 65 and LEFT lane over 80 unless there is heavy traffic where everyone is pack drafting at 70. The alternate is crawling at 15 because somebody lost it or was rearended during breaking.
Fortunately I get to watch the show from the front seat of a bus during my commute from New Hampshire to Boston.
when it comes to upping the speed limit, there was a study that i read a while ago that said most (a high percentage number that i have since forgotten) drivers start to feel unsafe driving at speeds over 90. so even if the speed limit is removed or increased, the max average speed would end up being 90.
also, as others have posted, american driving standards are horrible. If they started doing the tests like they do in other countries today, then in about 20 years they could start to develop the safety precautions and all the red tape. then in another 10 years or so, they could start to make the headway of actually building and making the necessary updates to create an autobahn.
also, other than states like montana, there isnt a sensible place for an autobahn like roadway as there exits and entrances very often. If there was new interstates built that were like express express ways that skipped over a lot of the entrances and exits then it would make more sense. But in order to do this, our tax dollars would need to actually be used on domestic affairs.
Have you seen some of junk driving on American roads? Germany is really strict on car inspections and driver testing.
I seen a car trailer today with four miss matched car tires in different sizes being towed by truck that was junkyard refugee. Of course the lights were all busted off and the pigtail was nothing but a shredded bundle of wires dragging on the ground.
... and German drivers are focused on one thing.......driving. No texting, fumbling with radios, eating, etc. Hands at 10 and 2. If you fail to yield to a faster driver, you will get a ticket.
