It was more of a surprise to me, after buying cars for several decades to run into that issue.
I understand, when I moved here from Norway it threw me off that they didn't just let me keep the car for a few hours or days here in the states.

That being said, all "Next Generation" stores allows customer test drives alone, so they're slowly changing too.

In other news my latest car is from CarMax and so far it's in very good shape.

I have been spoiled. My brother was in the car business for years and I was always able to take a car out for an entire day. Also, when I managed a corporate fleet, I had contacts at most of the local dealerships.

If I am interested in buying a new car, I always rent the vehicle for a long weekend and drive it. It gives me a good idea as to what I am getting into.

Well the positive thing is that they'll let you return the car within 5 days if you don't like it, so essentially, if you're really serious about the car, you can always take an "extended 5-day" test drive.

Does Carmax negotiate at all on their transfer fees?

I see a car I like on their site, but don't want to pay nearly $500 to have it transferred to my location and then find something about it that would change my mind about buying the car!

is the transfer fee apart of the full refund they promise if the car is returned within five days?

The reason for a salesmen riding along with the lookie loo is because there have been many instances of people not returning the car after a test ride. All people aren't honorable and if they don't know you, why would they trust you.
If you have bad intentions and don't return the car, the dealer is screwed. If they call the police to report it stolen, the police will not take a report because the vehicle wasn't stolen. The salesperson allowed them to take the car, therefor not stolen. The only recourse the dealer has is to hire a repo company to try to get the car back, and the bad guy is out nothing, no charges can be filed because he didn't steal the car, same as if he bought the car and didn't make the payments.
That is the reason most dealers will not allow you to test drive a vehicle without the salesperson riding with you,,,

The fee is paid upfront and is non refundable unless the vehicle arrives in a significantly different condition than promised (aka does not meet Carmax standards and cannot easily be made to meet them), be advised though, they are under no obligation to return your money in that situation and any refund would be a courtesy.

When you initiate a transfer, you have the ability to ask any questions you can think of and someone will physically inspect the vehicle for you at the sending location. If any of the questions are deal breakers, I would recommend telling the sales consultant to type that in after the question.

I paid $599 to have my newest vehicle brought from California to Dallas, and I'm very happy with the car.
