At General Motors' (NYSE: GM ) annual shareholders' meeting on Thursday, CEO Dan Akerson announced a new program: Buyers of new 2014 Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles will receive free routine maintenance for two years, or 24,000 miles.

The new program includes up to four visits a year and covers regular oil and filter changes and free tire rotations.

It's a sales pitch. Time will tell if it's a good one.

They also know that, like preventative health care, free maintenance is cost effective for their warranties.

as usual, GM with an on-going shrinking market share is late to the table...VW, Toyota, etc has been offering this for long time...

Okay, that one was good

Plus what does maintenance on the first 24,000 miles even cost? That's, what, three oil changes. Hot damn.

The useful longevity of any machine by any maker is determined in the first months of it's life.
Cars that are monitored and attended to well during that period WILL last longer and have fewer problems.

People tend to speak well of good running cars, to keep them longer and/or replace them with the same marque.
Oil, filters, a few donuts and a bit of shop time are a small price to pay for this.
Even if it happens with only 10% more than it does now it's worth it.

So what. It saves you $240. Whoopee.

And the rest of it is inspections only.

Outside of the oil changes and tire rotations, all the dealerships I deal with do at least a full page of inspection items anyway for free and include a free car wash (Chevy, Toyota).

It's a sales gimmick to sell cars.

It's only for 24,000 miles so it's not like GM will be out all that much. And they'll just raise the price to cover the cost so it's not like it's really free.

FWIW GM's marketshare YTD is up a couple tenths of a percent.
