No quads in 1st Gen, BUT same body / frame had Quads in 70's, so many cummins, conversions are done and for sale. I get 17 - 22 mpg with my 8500# dually 4x4 12V Cummins.
A friend had what i remember to be a crew cab D truck with a 12 valve Cummins. Maybe it was just extended cab. It was a 3500 SRW i guess the were sort of rare. I think it was an early 90's truck. It was a beautiful truck but you needed a kidney belt or #2000 in the bed to ride in it. He sold it about 10 years ago, a guy from CA flew out here and drove it home.
Mine does "hardly any towing" too, but when it does it's towing a mid-sized 5er, so I got a truck to tow a mid-sized 5er. You've got to buy for the biggest job it will need to do.
What will it be towing when it does tow?
I wouldn't buy a full-sized truck, even 1/2 ton, if it's only to haul a couple hundred pounds or to tow a small utility trailer.
I like my F250 PSD, but if I didn't need it for the 5er I'd much prefer something small, like my old Toyota.

Yeah I sometimes regret my f250 for towing. Probably should have gone with a dually. I have a 42' 5er thats probably around 15.5k loaded, and my truck is rated for 15.9k. Luckily I only tow it every few months. Just bought air bags to help level the truck at least.
After this diesel I may have a very hard time ever going to a gas truck. Even after I sell the 5er I'll probably keep the f250. Gas mileage is pretty comparable with gas trucks as well.
I have had quite afew trucks, and while maybe not the "best" trucks, they certainly did everything I wanted to do, and that has been the 92-97 F350's. Didn't seem to matter if it was a powerstroke or 460 powered with a 5 speed stick. They have always been the "old faithfuls" for me. Not best driving compared to new ones, not even close, but didn't wear you out either like the gm trucks I had. That said, I have driven 2004 and newer gm trucks and they were nice drivers! The Dodge with a cummins tho seems to have always got far better mpg than anything else. So affordibilty during the trip, wow, it's hard not to get in the Dodge. I feel the best truck would be the ford truck, with the Dodge's Cummins and the GM/Allision transmission! Out of brand new trucks, I'd do the Dodge.

Since a truck is often a VERY long term hold... you can find a rust free low mileage 92-97 F350's and drop in a Cummins and the GM/Allision transmission.
Often you can find 5.9's with Allison VERY cheap (~$1000) in the form of a box truck (large U-Haul). Can find lots of low mileage Ford pickups with gas engine.
This would be sweet and EZ conversion.
I did have a friend that made a crew cab VW diesel pickup from a Rabbit 4 door car in front and a pickup in rear. He got 45 mpg. I have routinely hauled as much as many pickups haul + use a SnowBear trailer behind my VW pickup. ~ 45-55 mpg. (without need for OPEC)
I'd wait to see the new Chevy and GMC with their new engines. They are saying that the mileage of their new V8 is better than the V6 Fords or Rams. Road and track gave the new trucks high marks when they test drove it also.

Whooo Hoo probably 23 mpg!
Naw I guess I woudl not wait for that. Makes n difference to me. Now produce a 30 MPG truck, you will get my attention.
Re-engaging on this, we are in the market. We happened to come across a 2007 Dakota crew cab 4X4 with the 4.7 L/auto, cruise, heated back windows, etc. with 92k miles for $15,900.
Any testamionials on these Dakotas? I heard the ones in the 90's were known for all sorts of problems.
