White cars are cheaper, because white is included in the base price, while all other colors are more. We still see a lot of silver but black seems to be far more common now in new cars. There are some pretty ugly colors out now, especially with small cars and hybrids, that I would never buy but someone must like them. Like this Fiat in overcooked peas green:

That is absolutely untrue, either way they have to pay for paint, white paint is no more expensive then black paint. I dont see much white, still see a lot of silver and black though.

I wouldn't like that green on many cars but you have to think that the Fiat 500 is a retro car emulating the original Fiat 500 from 1957-1975. Those funky colors were used in the 50's and 60's.

Every car i've ever looked at had a number of "base" colors included. You'd usually pay more for premium colors that have some uniqueness to it (like a pearl white, or a "sparkle" black etc.).
My cars are light grey or silver these days as they're easier to maintain. If someone was to offer to keep my car looking new, I'd opt for dark grey or black.
I mostly see shades, starting with deep black, and moving on down through various grays, silvers, and then whites.
I have been seeing some dark browns lately.
Some of the fancier paints are chameleon-like, reflecting the color of the cars surroundings. If you drive down a leafy wooded road, your car has a green tone. If it's a sunny day with blue skies, your car takes on a blue tone. These are my favorites.
I look at the cars in the parking garage, dealer lots, and to a lesser extent on the freeway to get an idea of local trends. I see several hundred cars a day usually. In the Detroit Metro area, it seems that drab colors are in grey (aka silver), grey green, grey blue, brown, brownish red, etc. I do not see a lot of bright colors, a few, but not too many. Even black cars are mostly dull black not shiny black. Reds and blues are dull reds and blues or mixed with grey or brown. Maybe every tenth or every fifteenth car is a bright color. shades of grey/silver and black seem most common. In California there is such and extreme variety of different ages, makes models and colors it is hard to identify any kind of a trend. Plus, it is hard to look much, traffic is always so crazy you have to focus very intently.

Funny, race car drivers used to avoid green, as they were considered unlucky.
The newest ( but not greatest) are the "frozen" or "flat" colors. Not a fan of the black, since it looks like a primer to me, but have gotten more and more interested in the silver frozen color BMW is offering. Problem is, they are extremely hard to take care of. No waxing, buffing, etc. Bird droppings that sit for any length will actually stain it.
Parking lots are full of the same: white, black, gray, silver. LOL...we can always spot the Orange BMW in a lot!
