Hey guys, I was wondering if you guys think the dealer will even take my car, and if so, what I should expect from them. I drive a 2008 Subaru WRX. It has been hit 4 times by separate people, none of the accidents I was at fault for. There is almost $10,000 of damage which the insurance company has paid for. I only paid $18k for it two years ago, so to me it really doesn't make since to spend that much to get it fixed. KBB says it's work $12k in poor condition and $17k in perfect condition. I would assume this classifies as worse than poor condition, but it doesn't have any mechanical issues at all. We're talking damage to both quarter panels, front right fender, bumper, and one door. What do you guys think I should do? Should I try craigslist if the dealer won't take it?

If its worth 12K in poor, and you have 10k in body damage, I would assume the car would be worth some where between $2,000-$4,000 the way it is

Try to sell it privately. There are potential buyers who would buy a car in good mechanical condition, if they can get it discounted for cosmetic defects. Some might even be willing to do the body work themselves. A dealer is obviously going to discount it steeply for body, and would never offer it for sale, just wholesale it to an auction yard.

Why not just keep the car and enjoy its mechanical reliability for a good long time? You already have something proviiding you with sound transportation.

the dealer will take the car as a trade in, i doubt they will give you very much for it though, and as noted it wont go on their lot for sale. it will get wholesaled out either at an auction house, or to a junkyard. if you want more than a couple thousand for the car, best to sell it yourself on craigslist.

Most new car dealers won't put it on their used car lot but will simply send it to auction so it is worth half as much to them. Private sale is the only way to maximize resale so if you don't want to deal with that you simply have to accept low valuation.

Poor would include some of that damage, so subtracting $10K from the poor price is probably not accurate. I'd be more inclined to take the $10K off of the perfect price of $17K, and work down from there.

From what I've read KBB is overly optimistic in their valuation.

I'd list it for $12,000 (or some number that's close to the "poor" KBB estimate) and go from there. It may cost $10K to fix it, but that doesn't mean that is $10K of value lost if you don't fix it. Even if you accept the KBB $17K number for excellent condtion, subtract $10K from that and sell it for $7K, on the assumption that if you fixed it, it would be excellent. You can always negotiate down if necessary. I think you're giving up a lot of money to list it for a very low price.
