just want to see what each person thinks/votes. 6 hours/360 miles or more road trip, where if something happens, your totally screwed.
I have personally drove cross country (3000 miles) on a car that has close to 200k, and yes, at some point i was scared that i might break down, and there is no reception, total darkness.
me personally right now, i would not drive 6 hours one way if the car had more than 175k.
for me as long as the car starts and runs, i will drive it across town or across country. for instance i took a truck that i had just bought a few weeks earlier and drove it 1200 miles in 24 hours. it had over 150k miles on it.
You know your car, and what kind of service it has had. Assuming that it is still running like a top because you have replaced all the vulnerable parts, and taken care of its maintenance, I would say go for it.
My 2001 Toyota has 151,000, and it has never given a bit of trouble. I've been told the serpentine belt is a ticking time-bomb, but I always think the dealer is trying to sell me something I don't need. I would take my car that far, with no worries.

Is your serpantine belt cracked, brittle, glazed, or over 7 years old? If so, your dealer is correct.
Assuming the dealer is always trying to take advantage of you is just as dangerous as assuming the dealer is always acting in your best interest. No vehicle runs forever without routine maintenance, and a belt is a maintenance item.
I've taken two vehicles on the road with 175,000-200,000 miles on them. I took them out for seven months driving coast to coast for a company averaging 3000 miles per month. One was an Impala and the other was a Caravan. I bought them both used with around 70,000 on them. I got an oil change every month and they were rarely below 1/2 quart low. In California during brush fires and Santa Ana winds I changed air filters a lot.
while i may be more comfortable taking drives across multiple states in a newer ride, that's not to say that every car i pass that's broken down is an old clunker. In fact my sister gave her son her old corolla (i think near 200k miles) as she wasnt sure of it's reliability anymore. He in turn drove it from Wi to southern TX for spring break and back, and it's still running a year later lol.
Newer cars can break, and older cars can run forever. Just take AAA along for the drive regardless.

Exactly. Cars that break down on a long trip seldom do so simply because they've finally run as long as they're capable of running. Usually it's either some neglected maintenance item completely unrelated to the age or mileage of the car or just a freak event.
Of course, the guy who hits the road in Iowa bound for California in a high-mileage ride with a slipping transmission and rattling engine is just asking for trouble.

Reason: spelling
I took my Camry with 300k plus on the odo from nyc to Canada...12+ hr drive....I wasn't even worried.
Like any long road trip...I do a visual underneath the hood. I usually do an oil change & make sure the tires are good. In the pre cell phone days...I have to admit, it was a little more nerve wrecking if I was truly in the middle of nowhere.
