I prefer the Pinzgauer, quite affordable. There is a dealer of them in Big Bear CA. They use a swiss air cooled motor. I see them for sale at $7500 and up.
I would love to have a Unimog (and no I don't have to compensate, thanks for the concern .) I saw one years ago and have wanted one ever since. Ultimate hunting truck, tow a boat or camper like no tomorrow anyplace you had the chones to try as well.
BLM used to run Unimogs as fire trucks. They were incredibly capable of going almost anywhere. The operative word is ALMOST, when they got stuck the only thing that could get to where they were and get them out was a dozer. They were also a tad expensive to maintain, so BLM went away from them.
I have driven them and liked them. The offset axle configuration gave great ground clearance and the diesels were strong with tons of torque. A bit impractical maybe, but certainly unique.
Forget that. At a M35A or the 950. The M35A my AM General would make the unimog look like a girly man. They will run on about any time of fuel, will go anywhere and are tough as nails. And are easier to procure than a mog.
I'm a fan of the Volvo Laplanders. They look a lot like the Pinzgauer above, but everyone I know who's driven both like the Lap a bit better. Especially in 4x4 conditions.
