I think your logic is based on the false premise that a $5 tip is going to one person rather than being spread out among a crew. Where I go my car is worked on by as many as 5 guys and they spend about 15-20 minutes on the car. Hell, maybe I should be tipping more than a fin.
You're saying that there is 75 man-minutes being spent on your car after an automated car wash?
I tip $3-$5 after an automated wash if the wiper is thorough. Doesn't matter if one or a hundred people are working on my car, it's the same amount of work.

No. What they said was 5 people work on the car all at once, for a total of 20 minutes.
Someone may wipe the dash and doors down, while someone else washes the interior windows while a couple of guys clean the tires and wipe down the exterior.

as with anything, it's easier to maintain cleanliness. washing and waxing. it helps if you live in the desert and it dosen't rain often. i pay $0.25 for my car wash and don't have to tip; a quarter in the drive in stall for :45 of high pressure water. two old towels in the back seat to wipe down. done.
Even though there's a jar stating tips are shared equally I always hand the person who gives me my keys a couple bucks with the receipt. I'm pretty sure they're expected to pool them - I just want the guy/girl to know I DID tip!.

All the DIY car washes I've seen have a minimum of $1 or $1.25 to begin.

The DIY I frequent has a minimum of $1.75. That's good for a couple rounds with the soapy spray including the wheels and then a flip of the switch for a couple rounds of rinse spray. A quick wipe down with one of those "miracle fiber" towels and I'm off and running leaving whatever mess there is behind.
I have never felt cheated or in need of more time, however, the system does allow for additional quarters if necessary.
