Parkways are called parkways because of the connotation of a broad boulevard lined with landscaping, especially in the median. Over time that landscaping thing became optional but the name sticks around because of the connotation of a regal grand boulevard. It denotes importance without the bother and expense of actually doing any landscaping.

A driveway is a private road. For most people, that means the private road that leads to their garage. Since most people live in suburbia where the private road is little more than a car length or two, it's a little ridiculous. But technically it's still a private road.

License plates are called license plates because they have the vehicle license number which allows the vehicle to be operated on public roads. Registration is the mechanism by which one acquires a license.

"License" - two syllables.

"Registration" - four syllables.

Q.E.D.

(You might want to consider how some people - especially the police - refer to them as "tags". I suppose that's about the smallest possible word that could be used to describe them in any way that's remotely accurate.)

I'm thinking you haven't seen a modern stereo in 15+ years, when pull-out radios started to disappear in lieu of removable faceplates.
