True, that's why you should increase your following distance as speed increases. Driving at 75 with an ample buffer in front of you is safer than tailgating at 55.
That problem could be solved by using road markings like they do in the UK. Keep apart 2 chevrons. If the speed limit is increased, the chevron markings are just be moved farther apart, to keep cars a safe distance apart. It would also make it possible for LEO to ticket drivers for following too close. Which would do more to increase road safety then writing speeding tickets.
Mmmm.... no thanks. Highway driving can be hypnotic enough without giant-ass road markings like that passing through one's field of view every second or two.
It's all about the money. If we as a society take the price tag out of the whole police-motorist relationship, the world would be a better place. I have a feeling that many cops will be relieved not to have sales quotas and the pressures that go along with them. It always disgusts me when there is some accident and there the cop is at the ambulance trying to make a quick sale when the people have other things to worry about. Cops can be used in other capacities rather than trying to raise cash, this fleecing of the motorists is not needed for insurance reasons, it is just a way to steal from people's wallets; a "crime of opportunity".

It is needed because people in this country don't have a clue how far to stay back. And that is what causes accidents, not speed. To say nothing about the traffic problems they cause with their stupid stop and go, stop and go, stop and go, because they are following too close.

Yes I agree. Following too closely makes stop and go worse. People just don't understand this. BTW- why there are no chevrons in the right lane. Is that the lane for tailgaters

I don't know. They use them selectively. In most pictures I've seen they use them in all lanes. I believe that the far right lane is only supposed to be used for passing. Since nobody should be driving continuously in that lane, maybe they don't thing they are needed there. But that's just a guess.
Anyways, this video shows how well they work. If you don't want to watch the entire video, the chevron section starts at 3:00.

And they still look stupid.
Those things would be ignored with impunity around here. If you try to leave a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, someone instantly moves in and fills the gap.

They have them here in Pennsylvania on a small stretch of I-80 and also on US-11. They use circles instead of chevrons.
