Happiness is fast. You need a fast car to catch it!

Plus, it's not against the law to 0-60 in 4 seconds as you get onto the freeway.

Believe it or not but there is some sort of law in place to prevent you from accelerating at a high rate of speed even if its to the legal limit. They can cite you for aggressive/reckless driving or participating in a speed contest. Just about any car will also need to break a bit of traction in order to hit their minimum 0-60 time.

So either you take the risk and drive like a bandit anyway, or you just have a high powered machine that you cannot actually use.

I've noticed that some of the slowest cars on the road are not the Prius, but Mustangs, Camaros and Porsches. Presumably because these drivers have already been slapped hard with expensive speeding tickets.

For 95% of the owners of these vehicles, the answer is as bolded. The overwhelming majority of these drivers buy into the high horsepower image. Fact is, yes it is overkill. It's their money; Gas is over $4/gallon and it isn't getting cheaper.

Kind of like the "Look at me, I'm Cool" loud muffler Harley riders.

yeah right. Maybe 1 out of 1000 drivers of these cars takes them on a race track. The other 999 are beating everyone to the red light while getting 14 MPG.

A friend received a ticket for "excessive acceleration".

Don't be hatin. I'd say 95% of the people I know who have these cars drive them fairly hard, fairly often. I know, because I'm among them when it happens.

If you're not a part of the car culture, you won't see it.

BTW-I went to the Woodward Dream Cruise this year. There were tens of thousands of performance owners who were making use of all that HP.

Myth.

I (and you) have never needed 400 HP to enter a highway. If a prius or 1966 VW bug can do it, a normal car can do it.

Sound like the same BS validation loud Harley riders have for their annoying (and illegal) loud mufflers: "You can hear me".

Why would you mention fuel costs when Porsche's and Corvette's get very good mileage figures? The 2014 Corvette produce 455hp and gets 30mpg highway. That is simply astounding. A 2013 Porsche 911 can hit 28mpg highway as well. These are very reasonable figures.

Half the fun is getting up to the speed limit. We won't talk about the other half.
