I've owned my 88 Samurai since 2000 and have put on about 100,000 miles (three engines). I enjoy driving it both on and off road. Other than engine failures, the 1.3 engine is very weak mechanically, I've had few problems with mine. I find that it goes very well in snow and have never experienced the brake lock up problem mentioned in a previous thread.
My friend's dad had a Suzuki Samurai back in high school and we gave that thing pure hell. You couldn't kill it. I think they made like 60hp but we could chirp the back tires in second. He sold it years ago but it's still running today.
Step 1: Buy a Polaris RZR, Arctic Cat Wildcat or Can-Am Maverick.
Step 2: Get the heck out of NJ
Both will make you happy-and the utvs will have more hp, much better suspension and 4x4 drivetrain than a Sammy. Not that I have anything against them, they are kind of neat little rigs.

As cool as those Samurai's are, and I would like to have one just to cruise around in I second this suggestion.
Any one of the Side by sides will leave this, a Jeep and a lot of sport quads in the dust. I've got an old '09 RZR 800 and can surprise a lot of people with how fast you can run the trails. The new 900XP and 1000XP's have more than double the HP and suspension travel...they are like mini Trophy Trucks.
Most states you can street legal them. Basically it is an assembly title like if you built a street rod.
