Unfortunately, it looks like the infotainment screen is not going away. Car makers seem determined to put all controls on one display. Problem is they all do thigs differently. Here's my personal preferance. If you have to have the infotainment screen, put the AC controls and stereo volume separate. Tactile knobs are safer than trying to touch a screen until you get to the AC or stereo controls. Allow the driver to create a custome screen display for things like car battery charge, vacuum, RPM (if there's none on dash), and other info drivers would like to see while driving. Other than stereo and climate control, i dont think the more advance features of infotainment systems should be accessed through touch screen unless the car is stopped and shifted into park. Truthfully, I don't want an infotainment screen. If I'm going to listen to Pandora in my car, I'll do so through my iPhone connected to car stereo either through Bluetooth or direct cable. I'm worried about how well connected the display is to the car's vital systems. With such connectivity, what would happen if you tried to change to an aftermarket stereo with an amp and better speakers? Would you loose the ability to control your AC and the advance features some vehicles offer (like with BMW's iDrive system)?
